9-1-1 should be dialed when a Police Officer, Ambulance, or Fire Truck is needed for an emergency.
When you dial 9-1-1 your call is received by a PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) Dispatcher at the Sanford Regional Communications Center in Sanford, Maine, who is responsible for processing your call. The Dispatcher determines what agency is needed, and what type of emergency you have. If your emergency requires fire or ambulance, the Dispatcher will immediately "tone" the appropriate agency with a push of a button while gathering important information from you. In some cases, the Dispatcher will keep you on the line until the emergency units arrive to assist you.
As an added safety feature, your telephone number and address is traceable when the Dispatcher answers your call. This provides greater protection for residents in the York County 9-1-1 system because it enables the Dispatcher to call you back if the line is disconnected or you are unable to talk.
